Ask for more hours on a task
When a task needs more time than was approved, you can ask an approver for more hours. This article shows you how to send the request and what happens next.
From the timer
If your workspace limits time to the approved hours, the timer stops when you reach the limit. In the window that opens, click Request more time. The same button appears if you try to start a timer on a task that's already at its limit.
From the Content Calendar
If your workspace uses the Content Calendar, tasks that have run out of time show an Ask for more time button in the This Week's Tasks panel.
Fill in the request
The Ask for more time window opens:
- Check the numbers at the top: Approved, Logged and Left. If the hours are split per person, these are your own hours on the task.
- Under How much more do you need?, type the extra time, for example
2hor1:30. - Under Why do you need it?, explain the reason. This is required. The reviewer sees only what you write here, so be clear.
- Click Send request.
The Ask for more time window, showing Approved, Logged and Left at the top, the amount and reason fields, and the Send request button.
Repeating tasks: a repeating task's hours are set per occurrence. The window spreads the extra time across the occurrences so far and shows how the per-occurrence amount will change before you send.
From the task page
You can also ask for more hours by editing the task:
- Open the task and click the pencil button (Edit task fields (requires approval)).
- Change the hours.
- Add a reason in the reason box.
- Click Submit for Approval.
What happens next
Your request is filed as a change to the task, so it follows your workspace's rules for task edits. Usually it goes to an approver, and the task keeps its current hours until it's approved. When it's approved, the new hours apply and you can keep working.
You can follow the request under My Tasks & Requests. See Track your requests.
Tip: ask before you run out. If you're close to the limit and know you'll need more, send the request early so your work isn't interrupted.
