Run a timer
The timer is the easiest way to track your work. This article shows you how to start, pause and stop a timer, and how to make sure your time is saved.
Start a timer
You can start a timer from several places:
- On a task page: click the play button next to the task title (it shows Start Timer when you hover over it).
- On a subtask: click the play button on the subtask's row.
- In your lists: on My Tasks & Requests (or Tasks & Approvals for managers), click the play icon under a task's checkbox.
- From Favorites: task and subtask favorites have a quick timer button. See Favorites and pop-out.
TaskFlow shows "Timer started on …" and a timer bar appears at the bottom of the screen.
A task page with the play button next to the title, and the running timer bar at the bottom of the screen.
You can only run one timer at a time. If you start a timer on a different task, TaskFlow stops the current one and saves its time first.
When the play button is greyed out
The timer is not available when:
- the task hasn't been approved yet (unless it is marked Urgent);
- the task is paused by an approver;
- the task has subtasks. In lists, start the timer on a subtask instead.
Pause and resume
Click the pause button in the timer bar (Pause timer). The bar shows Paused, and paused time is not counted. Click it again (Resume timer) to keep going.
Stop and save your time
- Click the green square in the timer bar (Stop the timer and save your time entry).
- A Notes (Optional) field appears. Type what you worked on and click Save, or click Skip to save without a note.
- TaskFlow confirms with "Timer stopped: … logged on …".
A timer that ran for less than one minute is not saved.
Discard a timer
The trash can in the timer bar throws the time away. It asks you to click again (Discard?) so a stray click can't lose your work. Use it only when the timer was started by mistake.
Other useful things
- Approved time left: if your workspace limits time to the approved hours, the timer bar shows how much is left, for example "1h 20m left". See Approved hours.
- Floating timer: in Chrome, Edge and Brave, the pop-out button opens the timer in a small window that stays on top of other apps.
- Across devices: your timer follows you. If you start it on your laptop and stop it on your phone, the laptop clears it the next time you open TaskFlow. Your time is only recorded once.
